Sentinel-6B is the latest in a line of ocean-monitoring satellites, following in the footsteps of its predecessor, Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich. Its primary mission? The launch of Sentinel-6B on November 17, 2025, marked a significant moment. A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carried the satellite into orbit from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The satellite reached its destination in under an hour, and by 07:54 CET, the European Space Operations Centre in Germany received the crucial signal, confirming Sentinel-6B was operational.

This mission continues a legacy of ocean observation that began in the early 1990s with the Topex-Poseidon satellite and continued through the Jason series. Sentinel-6 is the gold standard for sea-surface height measurements.

But here's where it gets interesting: Sentinel-6 isn't just a solo act. It's the result of incredible international collaboration, including the European Commission, ESA, NASA, Eumetsat, and NOAA, with support from the French space agency CNES. This partnership highlights the global commitment to understanding and addressing climate change.

Simonetta Cheli, ESA’s Director of Earth Observation Programs, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating that it demonstrates what can be achieved when international agencies and industries work together. Sentinel-6B will continue to provide the precise data needed to understand our changing climate and protect coastal communities.

And this is the part most people miss: Beyond monitoring long-term changes, Sentinel-6 provides data for practical applications like ocean forecasting. It measures significant wave height and wind speed, providing comprehensive ocean sea-state measurements.

The technology behind Sentinel-6 is fascinating. The satellite uses an altimeter that measures the time it takes for radar pulses to travel to Earth's surface and back. Combined with precise location data, this reveals the sea-surface height. The satellite also carries an advanced microwave radiometer provided by NASA. This instrument accounts for water vapor in the atmosphere, which affects the accuracy of the measurements.

Sentinel-6B is currently under the care of ESA’s mission control in Germany. Once the Launch and Early Orbit Phase is complete, control will be handed over to Eumetsat.
