Self-Portrait's Next Residency Project Is 'Sandiwara,' a Film by Sean Baker Starring Michelle Yeoh
London-based fashion label Self-Portrait is reaching new heights with its upcoming residency program. The brand has announced that for its second residency, Academy Award-winning director Sean Baker will create a short film titled 'Sandiwara,' featuring Academy Award-winning actress Michelle Yeoh in the lead role. The film will be shot in Penang, Malaysia, the hometown of Self-Portrait founder and creative director Han Chong.
'Sandiwara' is a Malay word meaning 'drama' or 'theatrical performance.' The film will explore Malaysian culture through the lens of food, music, and womanhood. This collaboration is a perfect fit for Self-Portrait's residency program, which aims to reflect the brand's customers' interactions with the world. It can take various forms, from fashion collections to experiences, music, books, or even multiple creators collaborating in unexpected ways.
Chong expressed his excitement about Baker's contribution, stating that it challenges traditional film and fashion collaboration methods. Baker and his team will immerse themselves in Penang's Malay culture, absorbing its textures, rituals, and everyday moments. This approach will bring new stories and fresh energy to Self-Portrait, broadening its perspective and inspiring both the brand and its audience.
'Sandiwara' is an extension of Baker's love for independent cinema. With Chong's support, Yeoh, and a dedicated team, they celebrated Malaysian culture. Baker expressed his gratitude for the freedom to create a film that goes beyond traditional fashion and cinema integration.
This marks Baker's first directorial release since his Academy Award-winning film 'Anora' and his first directorial production outside the U.S. It also signifies his first active collaboration with another creative from a different artistic discipline. Self-Portrait has evolved from a viral bridesmaid dress brand to a renowned fashion label offering ready-to-wear, accessories, and leather goods. The brand has released global campaigns featuring iconic models and counts celebrities like Jisoo of Black Pink and Apple Martin as brand ambassadors. Princess Kate Middleton has also been a long-time fan of the brand.
