The Kansas City Royals' trade dreams may be fading... But is it all doom and gloom?
The Royals have been active in the trade market this offseason, but a recent report from Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic suggests that their pursuit of two highly sought-after players might be in vain. The club is "increasingly unlikely" to trade for either Jarren Duran of the Red Sox or Brendan Donovan of the Cardinals, leaving fans wondering what's next.
But here's the twist: Both Duran and Donovan could have been game-changers for the Royals. Duran, a full-time outfielder, would have likely taken over the center field role, pushing Kyle Isbel to a depth position. Donovan, a versatile utility man, could have split time between the outfield and second base, creating a dynamic lineup.
However, the Royals' trade chips might not be enough to entice the Red Sox or Cardinals. While southpaw Kris Bubic is a valuable asset, it's hard to see either team accepting a rental player in exchange for their prized talents. Other pitchers like Cole Ragans and Noah Cameron are more attractive long-term options, but removing them from the rotation could disrupt the team's recent success.
And this is where it gets tricky: Without these trades, the Royals' outfield remains a concern. Isaac Collins in left, Jac Caglianone in right, and Lane Thomas in center don't exactly strike fear into opponents. While Collins and Caglianone could improve, Thomas's performance last year raises questions.
So, what's the solution? Well, there's still hope. Free agents like Mike Tauchman or Austin Hays could be affordable options later in the offseason. And trade rumors involving players like Luis Robert Jr. (White Sox), Jesus Sanchez (Astros), or Ramon Laureano (Padres) might just be the answer. Even an infielder, like the Cubs' Nico Hoerner or the Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr., could provide the spark the Royals need.
Controversy alert: Is it time for the Royals to consider a more drastic move? Could they afford to shake up their rotation for a superstar outfielder? Or should they focus on developing their current roster? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
