While existing analysis tools provide some relief, they are limited in their ability to identify subtle, context-dependent vulnerabilities that attackers frequently exploit.

AI is stepping in to revolutionize this landscape. We've demonstrated Claude's prowess in detecting novel, high-severity vulnerabilities, but this very capability could be a double-edged sword if it falls into the wrong hands.
Introducing Claude Code Security
Claude Code Security is our response to this challenge, designed to put the power of AI-driven vulnerability detection and mitigation squarely in the hands of defenders. It's a limited research preview, initially available to Enterprise and Team customers, with special access for open-source repository maintainers, allowing us to collaborate and ensure responsible deployment.
How Claude Code Security Works
Unlike traditional static analysis tools that rely on rule-based pattern matching, Claude Code Security reads and interprets code like a human security researcher. It understands the interactions between components, traces data flow, and identifies complex vulnerabilities that rule-based tools often miss.
Each finding undergoes a rigorous multi-stage verification process before reaching an analyst. Claude re-examines its findings, attempting to validate or disprove them, and filters out false positives. Findings are categorized by severity, helping teams prioritize their efforts.
Validated findings are presented in a dashboard, where teams can review, inspect suggested patches, and approve fixes. Claude provides a confidence rating for each finding, acknowledging the nuances that may not be apparent from source code alone. Ultimately, the decision to apply fixes rests with human developers.
The Evolution of Claude's Cybersecurity Capabilities
Claude Code Security builds on extensive research and real-world testing. Our Frontier Red Team has been putting Claude through its paces, participating in Capture-the-Flag events, partnering with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to defend critical infrastructure, and refining Claude's ability to identify and patch real vulnerabilities.
The results are impressive. Using Claude Opus 4.6, our team uncovered over 500 vulnerabilities in production open-source codebases, bugs that had evaded detection for decades despite expert reviews. We're now working with maintainers on triage and responsible disclosure, and plan to expand our security collaboration with the open-source community.
We've also used Claude to secure our own systems at Anthropic, finding it highly effective. Claude Code Security is our way of making these defensive capabilities more accessible.
The Future of Cybersecurity
We believe that AI-driven code scanning will become commonplace in the near future, given its effectiveness in uncovering long-hidden bugs and security issues. Attackers will leverage AI to identify vulnerabilities at unprecedented speeds, but defenders who act swiftly can stay one step ahead, patching these vulnerabilities and reducing the risk of attacks.
