A dramatic confrontation between humans and ravens over the control of the North has been put on hold, as the NWT Power Corporation (NTPC) retracted its earlier statement blaming wildlife for a significant power outage in Yellowknife.
Initially, the power corporation had attributed the extended four-hour blackout to "interference" from wildlife—an expression often linked to the notorious ravens. This claim sparked intrigue, as many were quick to assume that these clever birds were once again involved in causing an energy disruption. However, on Friday, NTPC clarified that the actual culprit was a "failed electrical connection within the Jackfish substation." In other words, no ravens were to blame this time around.
As NTPC spokesperson Doug Prendergast noted, "We still need to investigate further to determine why that electrical connection failed." This statement indicates that while wildlife encounters have historically resulted in power issues, this particular incident turned out to be an entirely different story. The initial assumption based on previous occurrences did not hold true in this case.
In related news, the City of Yellowknife has advised residents experiencing water issues to seek out steaming contractors. The city reassured the public via social media that there were no problems with the municipal water systems; the issue likely lay within individual properties. The city explained, "The City is aware that some residents are currently without water following last night’s power outage. In some homes, the outage interrupted power to water circulation pumps, potentially leading to frozen private water service lines."
For those affected by frozen lines, the city recommended contacting a steaming contractor to safely thaw the lines and ensure that their water circulation pumps are operating effectively.
