In a striking turn of events, the City of London Corporation has responded strongly to what it describes as "misleading and inaccurate claims" regarding its recent choice of a new operator for the four cafes located in Hampstead Heath and Queen's Park. This controversy arose after an impressive number of over 15,000 individuals signed a petition urging the retention of the current cafe operators.
The corporation’s announcement that Daisy Green would manage four out of five cafes, previously put up for tender last year, has ignited concerns among campaigners who worry about potential repercussions for the community. The City Corporation clarified that the retendering process was essential to guarantee that these cafes would continue to provide a "high-quality visitor experience" while also paving the way for future investments.
Additionally, the corporation highlighted that the previous operators were functioning under "unsustainable" lease agreements. Amidst the backlash, a campaign featuring well-known figures like Benedict Cumberbatch and James McAvoy sprang up to advocate for the current operators’ continuation in their roles.
On December 19th, the corporation confirmed that Daisy Green would take over the cafes situated at Golders Hill Park, Parliament Hill, Queen's Park, and Parliament Hill Lido within Hampstead Heath. A decision regarding a fifth cafe at Highgate Wood is still pending.
Doug Crawford, part of the Real Cafes Campaign which supports the existing operators, expressed skepticism about Daisy Green's qualifications for managing community-focused cafes. He raised an important question: "Why were leases awarded to a provider that lacks experience in running cafes geared towards the community, particularly when their background lies in catering high-end, pricey brunches to a transient clientele?"
Gregory Jones, chair of the Hampstead Heath, Highgate Wood and Queen's Park Committee, addressed some of the claims circulating in the community. He emphasized, "It’s crucial to clarify the facts. These cafes will not be closing. Previously, they operated on short-term agreements that hindered investments in their facilities. Transitioning to longer-term leases with Daisy Green enables necessary community investments and secures the cafes' futures. As trustees of the charities managing these public spaces at no cost to taxpayers, the City Corporation has an obligation to act in the best interests of those charities."
Mr. Jones, also an elected alderman representing one of the 25 wards in the City of London, characterized Daisy Green as "an independent, London-based business, rather than a national or multinational corporation."
