Chess Federations Urge FIDE to Keep Sanctions on Russia and Belarus | Nordic Opposition (2026)

The chess world is currently at a critical juncture, grappling with the question of whether to lift sanctions against Russia and Belarus. This decision has sparked heated debate, and the Norwegian and Nordic Chess Federations are making their voices heard.

In a press release, these federations, representing Denmark, Finland, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Sweden, Norway, and Greenland, are strongly urging FIDE (the World Chess Federation) to vote against lifting the existing sanctions. They're responding to a proposal, and a recommendation from the FIDE Council, that suggests easing restrictions on Russian and Belarusian chess federations.

This matter is scheduled for discussion at FIDE's digital General Assembly on December 14th, under item 3.1. The federations argue that there are no new developments that warrant changing the current restrictions. They emphasize that these restrictions align with the guidelines set by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

But here's where it gets controversial... The federations express concern that the proposal, particularly the FIDE Council's recommendation, seems to have been introduced at the last minute, giving the impression that it's driven by Russian interests and their supporters. They firmly believe that as an IOC-recognized international federation, FIDE should adhere to the IOC's guidelines.

The guidelines are quite clear: Russian and Belarusian athletes, especially national teams, should not be allowed to participate in international competitions. Exceptions, if any, should only be made for individual, neutral athletes (AIN) who meet very strict criteria, and these exceptions cannot extend to national teams or the use of national symbols. The federations highlight that the direction from the IOC, general sports law, and recent decisions by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) all support this stance.

To safeguard the integrity of chess and FIDE's standing in the international sports community, the Norwegian and Nordic Chess Federations are urging all delegates to vote against the proposal. They've proactively sent letters to all national chess presidents and delegates and will address the congress directly. They are hoping for widespread support to maintain the current sanctions.

What do you think? Do you agree with the Norwegian and Nordic Chess Federations? Should the sanctions remain in place, or are there compelling reasons to lift them? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
