Ben Oliver, a seasoned mountain biker with over a decade of international racing experience, made the transition to dedicated road racing this season. And he's already making waves! At the national championships in New Zealand, he showcased his speed by taking third in the time trial. But that's not all; he also dominated the road race, crossing the finish line first among the main peloton, although an early break meant he officially placed sixth.
The Vuelta a Andalucía race was a thrilling affair. The break was caught, and Oliver's team, Modern Adventure Pro Cycling, strategically positioned him for the flat sprint finish. With strong lead-outs from teams like Visma-Lease a Bike, UNO X-Mobility, and Pinarello-Q36.5 Pro Cycling, Oliver skillfully navigated the wheels, staying near the front. However, his quick thinking and seamless bunny hop to avoid an accident at a roundabout with less than 1km to go truly sealed the deal.
"It was an intense day of racing with the boys," Oliver shared in a team statement. "The pace was relentless all day. Many of us tackled the first 25k climb, and Lucas even made it into the break. We managed to stick together as a team."
This result is a huge celebration for Oliver, who dabbled in track racing last year, and for Modern Adventure Pro Cycling, a relatively new team on the international stage. With two 2.Pro level race podium finishes already under their belt, including Bryan Munton's second place at the AlUla Tour and now Oliver's third place at Vuelta a Andalucía, the team is off to an impressive start.
